Worn synchro hubs have rounded and damaged teeth, which can let the synchro slip during engagement. This can cause grinding, and makes shifting feel notchy, especially at high RPM.
Check which version of this transmission you have before you order a ZF slider kit. The ZF 5-speed S-542 was used in the Ford F-Series, Econoline and Bronco from 1987 to 1995. The 4x4 versions of this transmission were used in some 2WD heavy-duty applications, while 1992 and newer transmissions use an electronic speedometer sensor. The 4WD transmissions have a 31-spline output shaft.
